Students Explore the Magic of Morse Code During EU Code Week
8th primary school of Thebes in Greece | Teachers: ΜΑΤΣΑΓΓΟΥΡΑ ΕΙΡΗΝΗ & ΤΣΙΟΥΤΣΟΥ ΖΩΗ
As part of the EU Code Week and within the framework of the eTwinning project “SEL Wiz: Hocus Pocus – Heart and Mind in Focus: Discovering Nature’s Magic Within”, the students of class E2 at our school participated in the activity “Sending Messages Using Morse Code.” This action aimed to introduce pupils to coding and computational thinking in a playful, unplugged, and hands-on learning environment.
Students discovered the history and use of Morse Code, especially during World War II, and experimented with this alternative form of communication. After learning how the code works, they chose secret messages related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), encoded them using Morse, and sent them to partner schools across Europe. Their peers were then challenged to decode the hidden messages.
Through this creative and collaborative activity, students not only gained basic coding skills but also reflected on global goals and meaningful communication. All participating schools contributed to a shared interactive digital book that showcases their messages and decoded interpretations.

By traveling back in time with Morse Code, our students built bridges of understanding and cooperation with their European peers, bringing coding to life in a truly inspiring way.
