The added value of the active
participation of students from our school's integration classes in the European eTwinning
program through our experience this year.
The participation of inclusive education students in the eTwinning project
«SEL Wiz:
Hocus Pocus: Heart and mind in focus - Discovering Nature’s Magic Within” -
Celebrating UNESCO Days for Sustainability and Peace through the cultivation of
Social Research and Technology (SRT) in students» proved to be very important, as
it offered multiple benefits on an individual and educational level.
In
particular:
Social Skills Development: Students had the opportunity to
collaborate, communicate, and develop skills of collaboration, empathy, and
respect for diversity. This is especially critical for students with special
needs, who may face social isolation.
Self-confidence and self-esteem: Successful participation in an
international project, achieving common goals and recognizing their efforts,
significantly enhanced the self-confidence and self-esteem of students in inclusive education.
Elimination
of stereotypes: The program encouraged interaction with students from
different countries and backgrounds, contributing to the elimination of
stereotypes and prejudices regarding special educational needs.
Active and experiential learning: The
eTwinning project was based on project-based learning and experiential
learning. This way of learning seemed more effective for students with specific
learning difficulties and disabilities, as it allowed them to learn through
practice and experience.
Developing 21st century skills: Students practiced
critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration, communication, and digital
skills – essential skills for the future.
Motivation for learning: Participation in this year's
interesting and innovative project with a European dimension increased
students' motivation and participation in the learning process.
Curriculum
flexibility: The European eTwinning program offered opportunities
to escape the narrow confines of the classroom and curriculum, enriching
learning with new perspectives and topics.
Foreign language practice: Communicating with students from
other countries, mainly in English, gave students the opportunity to practice
and improve their language skills in an authentic environment.
Intercultural understanding:
Students came into contact with different cultures, traditions and ways of
thinking, developing intercultural awareness and tolerance.
Use of digital tools: eTwinning has particularly
encouraged the use of new digital tools and communication technologies (ICT)
for collaboration and project implementation. This has contributed to the
development of students' digital skills, which is vital in today's world.
In conclusion the participation of inclusive education students in programs
such as eTwinning is not just an opportunity, but a necessity. It provides an
environment where they can develop not only academic knowledge, but also vital
social, emotional and communication skills, promoting their full inclusion in
society and education.
